School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Ellery Ingall is a Professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His lab team investigates the chemistry of marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments.  Many of their studies focus on key nutrient elements phosphorus, nitrogen and iron, which strongly impact the growth of plankton in the ocean.  An ongoing theme of their research is the development of new technologies, such as synchrotron spectroscopies and electrodialysis to better understand elemental cycling. They also strive to improve K-12 Earth Science Education in Georgia through teacher workshops.

Research Interest(s):  Environmental chemistry is my overall focus.  Recently I have been fascinated with characterizing the chemistry of really small things like aerosol particles and marine plankton using the latest technologies.

Where do you like to spend time in Atlanta?  The Buford Highway is a delightful jumble of diverse cultures.  I enjoy buying groceries and going to restaurants offering a huge variety of interesting foods from around the world.

What piece of advice do you have for freshman Tech students?
Incorporate exercise into your routine.  The CRC is a wonderful facility offering many fun exercise classes that keep workouts from getting boring.

What is one thing most students don't know about you? I enjoy making ceramics, it is a nice blend of art, geology and chemistry.
