UrbEnergy

Many universities have attempted to reduce student electricity consumption by incorporating various student intervention methods, such as sustainability education combined with real-time energy usage feedback, but the individual effects of each method have not been widely studied. UrbEnergy has conducted an experiment to test the efficacy of sustainability education, real-time dorm feedback, and real-time dorm feedback in comparison with other dorms, with the ultimate goal of reducing Georgia Tech students’ electricity consumption through behavioral change. A total of six Georgia Tech freshmen dorms, one dorm for each variable, one dorm as a control dorm, and two dorms as comparison dorms were used to test the impact of the experimental variables. Over a period of eight-weeks in Spring of 2015, overall dorm electricity data was collected every day for each dorm. At the end of Spring 2015 all collected data was compiled and analyzed with the goal of informing future residential experiences.
