Currently, 7.4 percent of patients in the United States are misidentified due to antiquated systems of identification. As a result, ninety-two percent of these patients are administered the incorrect medication[1]. The rate of misidentification is even larger in the pediatric environment. While iris recognition systems are being implemented to remedy the patient identification inaccuracy, this solution has not shown to be effective on children. Our goal is to develop an iris recognition system that addresses unique concerns regarding the ability to use an iris scanner with pediatric patients; specifically because of a child’s movement and attention span.
